Dr. Ram Chet
Chaudhary holds Ph. D. degree in Genetics and Plant Breeding and then Post
Doctorate from Germany and IRRI Philippines.
Native of India, he has been working with various national and
international organizations. Dr.
Chaudhary has spent past 45 years of his career in teaching Plant Breeding,
rice research and rice development in more than 60 countries of Asia, Europe,
Africa and Latin America. For the first
15 years, he was Professor of Plant Breeding in two major agricultural
universities, G. B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar,
and Rajendra Agriculture University, Patna, Bihar in India. He worked as Rice Specialist for 5 years with
The World Bank in Nigeria and 10 years as INGER Global Coordinator of International
Rice Research Institute (IRRI), based in the Philippines. Last 15 years he has
worked with Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in
Afghanistan, DPR Korea, Iraq, Myanmar, Uganda and Zambia. After retiring from FAO, he is devoting most
of his time as Chairman of Participatory Rural Development Foundation (PRDF)
based in Gorakhpur, India and works on the agricultural problems of eastern
India. He is also international
consultant for ADB, EC, FAO, IRRI, UNDP and UNOPS.
Dr. Chaudhary has helped develop and release 156 varieties of rice in
India, Cambodia other Asian and African countries. He has published
more than 300 books, monographs, bulletins and research papers, including 34
published by FAO, IRRI and The World Bank.
His book “Introduction to Plant Breeding” is a text book at UG level in
Indian agricultural universities.
Recently, FAO published his 3 books on crop production, seed production
and weed control of NERICA rice in Uganda. Member of several national and international
professional societies, he is a regular contributor to research and popular
